TRIBUTES have been pouring in from as far afield as the USA for one of Teesside's most popular table tennis players.

Robin Donnelly, 55, died at Boulby Potash Mine, where he worked as a controller, on Saturday, July 26.

Robin was born in Middlesbrough, but had spent the last 23 years living at Carlin How with wife Linda, 43, son Simon, 22 and daughter Stephanie, 20.

He began his successful table tennis career at the age of 15 and joined Ormesby Table Tennis Club, where he played for about 11 years.

As one of the area's top players, he played for Cleveland county at senior level, and was Middlesbrough Veterans champion.

He was also a hugely popular coach for Ormesby and British League teams.

David Jones, an old school friend of Robin's logged on to the Evening Gazette website from New York to leave his message of condolence.

"I was at high school with Robin, and keen on table tennis myself," David wrote.

"Needless to say I didn't take a point off him when he played me. …
