REBECCA ADLINGTON The 48-year wait for a female Olympic swimming champion is over! 19-year-old Rebecca (right), from Mansfield, swam a tactically perfect race in the 400 metres freestyle (her second best event), coming out of nowhere to chase down Katie Hoffin the final 50m and grab gold. Jo Jackson iced the British cake by claiming the bronze medal.

AMAURY LEVEAUX The Frenchman (right) pulled out of the 200m freestyle semi-finals, handing a spot to Britains Robbie Renwick, who had finished seventeenth after the heats. The Scotsman, who only turned 20 last month, duly took his chance and somehow qualified for the final eight. Perhaps he can now go on and upset Michael Phelps attempt at a record eight golds?

GB MENS HOCKEY After the women suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss at the hands of the Germans yesterday, the men redeemed British hockey with a more than respectable 4-2 victory over Pakistan, who finished fifth at the last Olympics. …
