MEETING Teesside's Olympic hopefuls and their families has been a real highlight for me.

Five athletes from Middlesbrough, Redcar, New Marske, Nunthorpe and Hartlepool are in Beijing competing in events from cycling to race walking and swimming.

It's great to know there are five Teessiders to cheer on as they strive for a coveted gold medal, in what is the biggest sporting event on the calendar.

Jemma Lowe, a swimmer from Hartlepool, who races today, is one of three young Teesside ladies hoping to take a place on the podium, along with Redcar pentathlete and part-time model Katy Livingston.

Johanna Jackson, of New Marske, who recently smashed the national 5000m race walking record, is another Great British hopeful.

Family-man and champion cyclist Chris Newton, from Middlesbrough, is hoping to bring a gold medal home to eight-month-old daughter, Grace.

And Boro long jumper Chris Tomlinson, who married his childhood sweetheart Lucia Rovardi in May, will also be reaching for the smoggy Beijing sky. …
