Standard Has Been Set for Signings; Trio's Key Role in Devils Draw

Manchester United1 Newcastle United 1 KEVIN Keegan is excited at the prospect of receiving a "wow signing" from Mike Ashley before the transfer window closes at the end of the month but he warned the new man must match the attitude his three debutants showed yesterday, writes STUART R AYNER.

Jonas Gutierrez, Fabricio Coloccini and Danny Guthrie played their first games for the Magpies in a hugely encouraging 1-1 draw at Manchester United, with Gutierrez probably the best player on the field.

And Keegan has pointed to his new trio as an example of what he is expecting from any new men he signs during the last few weeks of transfer activity.

Reports in a national newspaper yesterday suggested Ashley had promised some of the club's lapsed corporate guests a "wow signing" and while the manager claimed it was news to him, he was excited by it.

"I'm looking forward to that," he said.

"Very much. We'll definitely have one or two new signings (before the transfer window closes). I don't know what the 'wow' signing is but I can't wait to ring him (Ashley) when I get home. It's a shame he told corporate guests before he let me and Terry Mac (his assistant, Terry McDermott) know."

Asked about speculation it could be Argentina's Javier Saviola, he responded: "It'd be nice for starters." But despite his playful dig at the communication from the club's hierarchy, Keegan was full of praise for the job they are doing before spelling out his criteria for new players.

"With Dennis Wise, Tony Jiminez, Derek Llambias and Mike Ashley we're working really well to get quality players in," he said. "Too often in the last few years Newcastle have bought players who for whatever reason have not been quite good enough. Sometimes they haven't settled or seemed to have understood what it means to play for Newcastle United. I think the three we've got so far do and the next three must as well. If that means waiting, so be it.

"The fans have seen two or three new signings who they know have come to Newcastle to play for the club in the right manner. The journey home won't be quite so long. But that's gone now. …
