TYNESIDE college will be running the worldrenowned International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma programme from next month.

Newcastle College's sixth form is licensed to run the programme after being given the go-ahead by the director general of the IB organisation in Switzerland.

This aims to open up global opportunities for staff and students as the college assumes responsibility for co-ordinating the highlyregarded qualification across all schools in Newcastle in its role as the Governmentdesignated IB hub.

Starting in September, the diploma programme, which can be studied as an alternative to A-levels, is a rigorous, two-year pre-university course.

Jackie Fisher, principal and chief executive at Newcastle College, said: "We are delighted to have been authorised as an IB World School.

"The diploma gives Newcastle College a fantastic opportunity to form international connections."

Meanwhile, Tyne Metropolitan College, in North Tyneside, has been running the IB programme successfully for the last couple of years.

Student Rosie Cowan finished her IB course at Tyne Met this summer. She said: "The main reason I took IB was the fact I was constantly changing my mind about what I want to do in the future.

"Because you take so many different lessons as part of the diploma it meant I was able to keep my options open, without narrowing it down to just three subjects.

"The other attractive aspect of the course is also the international links the college has with schools in other countries like Norway and Italy, along with the fact the IB course itself encourages the development of knowledge and understanding of cultures different to our own.

"In my two years on the course I have managed to take part in a five-day fashion workshop in Italy, made new friendships with students from Norway and Poland, and I even spent my 18th birthday in Barcelona. …
