Regents to Present University Spending Cuts; They Plan a 6 Percent Trim, Will Hear Proposals Up to 10 Percent

ATLANTA - Regents will unveil plans to slice college spending by as much as 10 percent today as the University System of Georgia comes to grips with its share of the state's deepening budget crisis.

The Board of Regents will technically only give approval to a 6 percent cut, the smallest budget hit asked for by Gov. Sonny Perdue. But they will also be briefed on proposals to cut 8 percent and 10 percent from the system's spending under instructions Perdue's office has given to all agencies.

In remarks to the board, House Majority Leader Jerry Keen, R-St. Simons Island, told the board that lawmakers hadn't turned their back on the state's network of 35 public colleges and universities, but offered scant optimism on the budget.

"There is as strong a commitment to our university system as ever," Keen said. "... I'm hopeful that good times are just around the corner. But we have to budget and prepare in case they're not. …
