A MAN accused of imprisoning a woman in his home and repeatedly raping her has been cleared of all charges.

A jury took less than 40 minutes to reach unanimous not guilty verdicts on John Peart, 36, at Teesside Crown Court yesterday.

Peart, of Lomond Avenue, Billingham, denied all charges against him. He consistently denied locking up the woman or any violent sexual activity.

After a three-day trial, the jury acquitted Peart of five charges of rape and one of false imprisonment.

They also cleared him of another charge of rape and one of sexual assault on the direction of Judge Michael Taylor.

The prosecution alleged Peart subjected the woman to a series of sex attacks at his home over the course of one weekend.

The complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said she went to his home, stayed overnight and had consensual sex with Peart.

She said the next day he threatened her at knifepoint and raped her in the sitting room then forced himself upon her again in his bedroom. …
