GARY GLITTER arrived back in Britain today grinning arrogantly as he was surrounded by police.

He was immediately taken to a private room in Heathrow Airport where he was questioned by immigration officers and police. The paedophile landed at the airport after a 10-hour flight from Bangkok, ending a bizarre week-long hunt for a country which would take him, including a series of shuttle flights around south-east Asia.

Armed officers were due to escort the convicted child abuser to a police station to sign the sex offenders register.

Policewere then due to obtain a court order which will force the 64- year- old to notify them if he changes his address or name, or face arrest.

Glitter real name Paul Gadd was taken off the Thai Airways flight ahead of other passengers.

Witnesses told how the former pop star was whisked through border control in front of dozens of others, as they queued to enter the country .

He smiled and seemed unfazed as he was escorted by about 13 people, including armed officers .

One onlooker said: " He went past us and went through border control and then out through another door to an office. People were pointing and saying ' who's he?'." Glitter was released from Thu Duc jail in Vietnam on Tuesday after serving almost three years for abusing two girls aged 10 and 11. He was ordered out of Vietnam and travelled to Bangkok, where he was expected to board a flight to Heathrow under the terms of his release.

But on arrival in the Thai capital, Glitter reportedly feigned heart trouble to avoid boarding the UK- bound plane.

He was barred entry to Thailand and warned that he would be taken to a detention centre if he continued to refuse to leave the country .

After spending about 20 hours in the transit lounge at Bangkok Airport, Glitter boarded a flight to Hong Kong in the hope that he would be accepted there.

But the Chinese authorities barred him entry and he was put back on a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok. On his arrival he was again told by Thai authorities that he was not welcome.

With a growing list of countries stating they would deny him entry, Glitter was left with little choice but to return to Britain . …
