IT'S BOOM time for Teesside allotments as hundreds of families join the grow-your-own brigade - and get digging.

With rocketing food prices and a passion for eating organic, a plot of their own has become a bloomin' passion.

In the second part of our weekly series, chief writer BARBARA ARGUMENT checks out the fruits of their labours.

FRUIT and veg are Justin Lee's business - and his passion too.

From crack of dawn he's out delivering produce to local greengrocers from an Eaglescliffe wholesaler.

But once 36-year-old Middlesbrough dad Justin clocks off, he can't wait to get to his Saltersgill allotment.

"He's always been a keen gardener, but now sometimes he forgets to come home," said wife Valerie.

Justin has a huge one-sixth plot which last year was covered in weeds and brambles but now grows soft fruit and some favourite veggies like turnips, potatoes, sprouts and broccoli with tomatoes and cucumbers in the greenhouse. …
