REDCAR race walking ace Martin Fisher has completed a rare feat after 20 years of gruelling competition.

He has been presented with the Fred Baker Plate for completing 20 events of over 100 miles, all within a time of 24 hours.

The plate has rarely been awarded, as walkers can compete in only one 100-mile event a year, so it takes a minimum of 20 years to win the award.

His plate-clinching day came at Milton Keynes when he and team-mate Dave Jones won the National Championships for the Redcar Race Walking Club - the club's first ever title at that level, though they have finished second and third in the past.

Out of a field of 26, Jones finished 3rd in a time of 21 hours 55 minutes and 19 secs, while Fisher came fifth in just over 23 hours. They had to endure torrential rain through the night and a two-hour floodlight failure before completing the 400 laps of the track.

The Redcar duo, both international, were presented with the Tom Reynolds Shield. …
