RESIDENTS can find out more about their local fire and rescue service at special open days.

Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service has organised a series of open days at three of its community fire stations.

Birtley, Gosforth and Wallsend Fire Stations will open their doors to visitors on Saturday August 30, giving people a chance see at first hand the work that fire crews do.

Firefighters will be on hand to give safety advice to visitors. There will also be operational drills and other demonstrations, as well as the chance to look around the station yard, appliance room and the fire appliances.

Anyone interested in a career in the fire and rescue service can also get information and advice.

Chris Lowther, Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service's group manager for prevention and education, said: "Keeping the public safe drives the work of everyone in Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service and, as well as letting residents see how their local fire station works, open days like this are a chance for us to spread our community safety messages and help people find out how to keep themselves and their families safe from fire. …
