THE search to find the stars of the North-east business world in our North-East Business Executive of the Year Awards 2008 continues. This week we profile last year's Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

LIFETIME Achievement Award winner Robert Dickinson was recognised not just for a career which saw him rise to become one of the region's best-known lawyers.

He is also a respected figure at many of the North-east's biggest companies.

His name is a notable addition to the distinguished list honoured by the title at the awards organised by the Gazette and its Tyneside sister paper, the Journal.

He is credited largely with bringing about the Northern Rock Foundation, which benefits thousands of people in community activities. The same foundation also served as a ringfence against any early takeover when Northern Rock converted from a building society to a public company.

And whatever the problems recently faced by the Newcastle-based bank, there has been widespread admiration for the good that the foundation has achieved in helping people.

Mr Dickinson left the region for his education and early training in his legal career in London, but he returned to make his name.

He reached the peak of his legal career as senior partner of law firm Dickinson Dees (1987-97) - the largest on Teesside and in the North-east - where he was the fifth-generation member of his family to work. Robin Bloom, senior partner with Dickinson Dees today, said: "Without Robert's legacy, Dickinson Dees would not have been what it is today."

Mr Dickinson chaired Northern Rock from 1992 to 1999, when he steered it from building society to plc. He was chairman of Northern Investors from 1984, and chairmanof Grainger Trust from1992. He has also been a director of Tyne-Tees Television, Barclays Bank and Reg Vardy and non-executive director of more than 12 commercial organisations and subsidiaries. …
