Education Sector Can Give Itself Full Marks; Focus on the Region's Universities Universities and Colleges in the North East Are Top of the Class in the Property Market, Says Colin Davidson

THE North East education sector is growing at an exceptional rate and is having a positive impact upon the local property market, both in terms of providing an important catalyst for major regeneration projects, and maintaining momentum in the property and construction market while occupier demand from the private sector is slow.

Each of the universities and both Newcastle College and Gateshead College are providing substantial investment in new buildings.

The development of Northumbria University's City East campus, housing the schools of law, design and Newcastle Business School, has had a significant impact on the regeneration of the former Manors site.

The new development is also having a positive impact on nearby areas. A new bridge link over the central motorway has made New Bridge Street more accessible and Melbourne Street is benefiting from student led redevelopment. As well as regenerating areas of the city, there is a knock-on effect to the local economy due to increased student numbers.

An indicator of the success of this can be seen by the arrival of Nancy's Bordello, a new bar to cater for the student population.

Likewise, Gateshead College's new campus, developed by Terrace Hill at Baltic Business Quarter, will strengthen the regeneration on the Tyne's south bank, bringing large numbers of students to the location, while being convenient to the city centre and easy to access by public transport. …
