A local veterans group has come through again.

The American Legion Riders Florida Chapter 316 raised $6,200 in its recent "poker run," reports a city of Jacksonville news release.

The money will go to a homeless veterans program sponsored by the city's Military Affairs, Veterans and Disabled Services Division.

Post 316, located near Mayport Naval Station, has hosted several charity poker runs in the past. Its members are to be commended.


As unlikely as it sounds, children can have a good time while hospitalized.

At least, that's the mission of the Art With a Heart for Children organization.

Five days a week, according to the group's Web site, artists visit Wolfson Children's Hospital and Nemours Children's Clinic.

They set up temporary "studios" throughout the facilities and "create art sessions individualized to meet the needs of each child."

Lori Guadagno founded the nonprofit with her cousin Lisa Landwirth seven years ago, a news release states:

"Making art may be the reason a child smiles through the pain of another round of chemotherapy; why another is able to reduce her pain medicine; and why a young man, so inspired by the creative experience of painting, makes it his last wish to write and illustrate a book to help other children cope with leukemia."

This is an excellent cause, for a group of young people very much in need.


More than 2,000 students attended the recent Back to School Rally and Health Fair at Gateway Mall, according to the sponsor, Communities in Schools Jacksonville.

They were given supplies, screenings and immunizations.

This city has a lot of low-income students. This program, in its eighth year, helps them get off to a good start each school year.

Communities in Schools has been in Jacksonville for nearly two decades - and it now serves 50 local schools. …
