THE Bank Holiday weekend felt like the film From Here to Eternity for Burnmoor secretary Ian Linsley.

His side rose from the depths to pick up a sensational victory that put them into what could prove to be a decisive lead in the Warmseal Durham Senior League championship race.

With close rivals Hetton Lyons starting their game on time at Felling, there was a mood of despondency prevailing at Burnmoor where frantic mopping up operations were still going on.

Ian said: "At one time the pitch could best be described as a swamp, and hours of work looked like going to waste with the clock ticking.

"But with the goodwill of the umpires we eventually got on the field an hour and a quarter after the scheduled starting time.

"But just as we got started there was another 15-minute stoppage while we were told to put some sawdust on the outfield.

"I've never known anything like it - I was going about throwing sawdust around like chicken feed! …
