THE title race in the Warmseal Durham Senior League will go into the last week of the season after Hetton Lyons could only draw at Horden, but leaders Burnmoor came up against tough opponents at Marsden.

When Horden won the toss and decided to bat against Hetton Lyons it immediately lopped ten from Hetton's potential points haul from the game.

Graham Smith (41) and Adrian Hedley (36) gave Horden a positive start before some hard graft from the Lyons' trio of Surrapuligge Malinga, Kieran Waterson, and Ian Male, who each took three wickets, held Horden to 182.

A century second-wicket stand between Liam Mallaburn (64) and Paul Riddle (41) then looked to be powering Hetton to a regulation victory until Adam Dixon stepped in and grabbed six wickets in a 16-over burst.

Tight bowling by the Marsden attack restricted Burnmoor to 152 for six, a declaration coming after 51 overs.

Marsden skipper Chris Mann then batted stoically for all 48 overs of his team's reply, ending undefeated with 41 to his name. Ian Conn (15 overs, 5-32) once again being Burnmoor's key man as the hosts finished on 86-5.

Burnmoor need just six points to be sure of retaining the title.

The battle at the bottom remains intense with only 14 points covering the bottom four. South Hetton are bottom after defeat by Felling.

In the Readers Durham County League, both Esh Winning and Shildon took the title race down to the wire, but W illington's hopes were all but ended by Crook.

Esh didn't have it all their own way against Evenwood as the Teesdale brothers fought tooth and nail Neil cracked eight fours and two sixes in a breezy 56, and with Billy hitting 31, the visitors got the best of starts from their openers. But then Paul Chivers (6-39) got to work, to leave only 131 needed for victory. Chivers (39no) held the run chase together, Esh winning with four wickets to spare. …
