A FORMER teacher has returned from South America where she helped improve the lives of women and children.

Sue Sinclair, 58, from Hutton Rudby, spent six weeks in La Paz, Bolivia, where she helped set up a children's playgroup and screening programme two years ago.

The former Stokesley School languages teacher returned to do further work with the playgroup and assist with a medical programme.

Sue has been working alongside charity co-operative, the Spirit of the Andes, La Paz, Bolivia, which works with indigenous children and women.

Sue raised about pounds 4,000 through giving talks at groups such as the Women's Institute, Rotary clubs and soroptimists clubs, to carry out the work she wanted to do in Bolivia.

This time she handed out over 100 toothbrushes, donated by Redcar Bowl, to children and left 10 grants to supply glasses to women.

She said: "We set up a tooth cleaning programme showing the children how to clean their teeth.

"Another thing we did this time for the indigenous women was to teach them to knit to a high standard and quite a few are getting a bit old now and need glasses so I left 10 grants towards glasses for the ladies. …
