A NEW festival has been launched showcasing Middlesbrough's past, present and future.

Discover Middlesbrough will celebrate the diversity of entertainment, culture, sport and leisure activity on offer in the borough.

Events lined up for the festival include the annual Heritage Open Days, outdoor activities, arts exhibitions, tours and interactive workshops.

Discover Middlesbrough will run from this Saturday to Thursday, September 25.

Among the highlights will be the Middlesbrough Town Meal, powerboat trips and the Supergay Weekend.

Fifteen thousand copies of a 32-page booklet listing all the activities on offer have been produced, and are now available at leisure centres, libraries and other Middlesbrough Council buildings.

Discover Middlesbrough incorporates the Heritage Open Days weekend, offering a programme of activities over four days.

The annual event is organised nationally by the Civic Trust. Middlesbrough's offer this year includes several walking trails, such as a guided tour of Teesside University, a Ghost Walk which explores the history of hauntings around the town centre and a Town Centre Heritage Tour.

The University of Teesside is currently restoring and cataloguing the British Steel archive and making it available to the public at Teesside Archives. From September 10-15 there will be a free exhibition at the university about the archive in the main hall of the Brittan Building. next to the main Tower Block. Powerboat trips on the Tees are a highlight this year along with a Transporter Bridge Climb on September 13, skating in Albert Park and a unique tour of the Stewart Park walled garden and nursery.
