Horsebox: Late Entry Pays off Well for Earith

A LATE entry for the Affiliated Dressage competition at Todburn Equestrian Centre, Longhorsley, proved worthwhile for Matt Earith when he was placed first and second in the Novice classes, narrowly beaten by Gillian Bassett on her event horse Rathvarra.

Riding Hopwoods Saab, a 15.1 bay mare for her owner, Sharon Spenser-Mullins, Earith was delighted to receive a score of 70% from judge Sue Stanton.

He said: "Sharon has let me ride Saab until she is out of Novice classes but I would love the chance to event her next season." Earith is unsure when his next dressage competition on Saab will be as he has horses entered for Hutton in the Forrest and Allerton Park Horse Trials in the coming weeks.

Originally from Derbyshire, Matt moved to Northumberland last year and now runs a livery and competion yard at Kearsley Farm, Ingoe.

Meanwhile, four Tyneside grandchildren of Helen Smith - who owns the coloured stallion Gypsy King (1985-2008) - have just returned from the CHAPS Championships with 24 rosettes and a Junior Championship under their belts. …
