IT all worked out in the end - but half an hour into their Division One North game at Woodley Sports, Newcastle Blue Star must have thought it just was not going to be their day.

It certainly started badly. Players assembled at Kingston Park for a 10am departure, but the windscreen wipers on the coach would not operate and a replacement had to be called for.

Unfortunately, the gearbox on the replacement bus developed a fault, leaving officials with no alternative other than to make arrangements for the players to travel by car.

Director of football Bob Morton said: "We did not get away until 10.45 and it was not the best of starts.

"We were playing on an artificial surface and it took us half an hour to adapt.

"By then, we were two goals down and I thought it was going to be one of those days - but again the lads came up trumps.

"They showed tremendous determination, and in the last 20 minutes Woodley Sports could not touch us. …
