Cycling: Petacchi Surges Home in Sprint Finish

LPR Brakes rider Alessandro Petacchi held off a late challenge from Great Britain's Rob Hayles to take a rainswept second stage win of the Tour of Britain in Gateshead yesterday.

The 34-year-old, who recently returned to action after suspension for a doping offence, won the opening stage in London and repeated the trick with a brilliant sprint finish to pip Hayles on the line. Stage four and five winner Edvald Boasson Hagen was a place further back while Agritubel's Geoffroy Lequarte retained the yellow jersey for the third successive day, although Liverpool's Steve Cummings is still on his tail in second.

Sheffield's Ben Swift maintained his 10-point lead at the top of the king of the mountains classification with Petacchi taking the points jersey from Matthew Goss.

Scotland's Evan Oliphant, Bradley McGee and Peter Williams made the first break of the day, one kilometre from the start in Darlington.

By the fifth kilometre they had raced away to open up a 58-second lead on the peloton, which had doubled by the end of the 11th kilometre. …
