Shooting Victim Was Ordered to Stay Away; Ex-Girlfriend Cites His Violent Past as Why She Got a Restraining Order

The restraining order was finalized Wednesday.

He was back Thursday. This time he had a gun.

Troy D. Merriweather, 44, whose criminal history was heavy with domestic battery charges, killed himself Thursday after shooting at Jacksonville police and his ex-girlfriend. No one but the gunman was harmed.

Arlene Bermudez said she was accosted by Merriweather, who was released from prison in 2005 for burglary, at her home before the shooting. She said she dated Merriweather for three months and ended the relationship about a month ago. He was livid that she didn't want to reconcile, so she filed an injunction for protection due to his past history of domestic violence.

"His mind would tend to wander, and he had a jealous rage," Bermudez said. "He could be a very dangerous man."

Even though the court ordered Merriweather to stay away, she found him waiting for her with a firearm. The former couple argued in front of her second-story apartment residence, and he threatened some of her neighbors, Bermudez said. …
