THE news that additional Tyne crossings are under serious consideration are most heartening.

A foot and cycle link between the regeneration areas of the West End of Newcastle and the employment opportunities at the MetroCentre would help people access jobs, and provision of additional parking at the northern bridgehead on the A695 Scotswood Road could be a viable location for a park and ride scheme for the city centre.

Even more interesting is the discussion of a major new crossing linking the Walker area with Heworth.

Creation of a major new road bridge at this point could significantly alleviate congestion on the central Newcastle-Gateshead crossings, but could also act as a major stimulus for the economic regeneration of the Walker Riverside area.

There are already exciting plans under development to expand the highly successful offshore park, and enabling lorries and trucks to access the many industrial sites on both sides of the river without clogging the Tyne Tunnel or Tyne Bridge would improve competitiveness and free up road capacity in the city centre. …
