Culture: Pounds 500,000 Boost for Art on Tyneside Display

GRANTS totalling more than pounds 500,000 have been awarded for redeveloping the popular Art on Tyneside display at Newcastle's Laing Art Gallery.

The display highlights the work of some of the most famous artists and craftsmen from the North East, including engravers Thomas Bewick and Ralph Beilby and painter John Martin.

A sum of pounds 225,000 has been awarded jointly by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Wolfson Foundation while a further pounds 345,000 has been pledged by the Arts and Humanities Research Council via Newcastle University's International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies (ICCHS).

The university grant will be used to fund researchers who will work with gallery staff and members of the public to develop audio-visual elements of the new display.

Films, photographs, recordings and digital contributions will be collected and cared for by Tyne & Wear Museums as a resource for future research and exhibition projects. …
