NORTH SHIELDS Hockey Club bullied off their new season in style by retaining the Northumberland County Plate.

Wins over Jesmond (1-0), Tynedale (3-0) and Morpeth (2-0) did not always reflect Shields' dominance, as their opponents rarely got sight of their goal all day.

The final against Morpeth saw perhaps Shields' finest hockey ever in a first half where the Morpeth goal was constantly bombarded - and the 2-0 half-time scoreline could easily have been doubled.

The winning team and scorers were: Mick Riding, Osian Roberts, Mark Styles, Stephen Chater (1), Kieran Conway, Daniel Jones, Chris Brunton, Glen Bertenshaw (1), Mark Harrison (2), Richy Foster, Adam Lough (1), and Billy Sowter (1).

Shields also fielded a second team in the competition.

Two 3-0 and 6-0 defeats were recorded against Tynemouth and Morpeth respectively, but these were easily offset by a 1-0 win over Newcastle, Niall Piper the goalscorer.

Leading up to the weekend, Shields recorded a 5-1 win over Morpeth with goals from Adam Lough, Billy Sowter (2), David Yellowley and Dan Jones. …
