Firefighters Blast Arson Timewasters; Call-Out Puts Family at Risk

LIVES were put at risk when firefighters were sent to a petty arson attempt, as a real emergency unfolded.

When a fire crew from West Denton was called to a potentially life-threatening fire at a home in Newbiggin Hall, they had to instead call on colleagues at Colby Court fire station to deal with the situation.

Crucial time was lost as the closest crew to the blaze was busy tackling a rubbish fire in Lemington, believed to have been started deliberately.

Their help was needed at the same time to rescue a family whose chip pan set alight at their home in Eastgarth at around 8pm.

Frustrated firefighters say it is a textbook example of how arson puts lives at risk, and is a scenario they often use to teach school pupils about not wasting crews' time.

But today the West Denton team said they were pleasantly surprised by the reaction of children at the scene of the rubbish fire.

Youths hanging around the fire engine heard the emergency radio calls for the crew to attend a chip pan fire. …
