GORDON Brown's new speech writer Tim Kiddell faces a baptism of fire tomorrow when the Prime Minister makes the political speech of his life.

As the Londoner recently revealed, Brown hired Kiddell in the nick of time on the eve of the party confernce season. But Brown is taking no chances with his rookie aide and is also believed to be calling on the expertise of Stephen Carter, who eight months ago was brought into Downing Street to revamp the creaking PR machine at Number 10.

"There will be several hands involved in getting Gordon's speech together," says one political insider.

"I don't think it's fair to say that Kiddell will get a clear run at it. Carter is still around and there's also talk that Alastair Campbell will be on hand.

"The speech is expected to be highly personal and it's been something Brown has been working on since his summer holiday in Suffolk." Over the weekend there were reports that Carter is to be offered a peerage after he threatened to quit his post. …
