College Smackdown; Early Lead Allowed Gators to Play on Cruise Control

The Gators jumped on Tennessee early and often last Saturday then cruised to a 30-6 win in front of 106,000 plus (at least at kickoff) in Neyland Stadium. The Gators were given a short field after a spectacular Brandon James kickoff return to start the game. Tim Tebow led the Gators down the field and then threw a way-too-easy jump pass to Aaron Hernandez to cap the touchdown drive. Gators over pumpkins, 7-0.

Tennessee fumbled on their third play from scrimmage and after a penalty and an ill-conceived wide receiver screen, the Gators faced third and 18. Doing his best impersonation of Brett Favre, Tebow completed a desperation pass to Kestahn Moore setting up a legitimate field goal try for Jonathan Phillips of 39 yards which he easily made - thanks I am sure in no small part to his very valuable experience gained late against Miami. Gators, 10-0.

Our defense held Tennessee to just one first down on their next possession and they were forced to punt to the always dangerous James. James of course took the punt back for a touchdown - the fourth of his career and the second against Tennessee - and we were up 17-0 before the first quarter ended. Ball game.

Tennessee would threaten a couple of times in the second quarter, but turned the ball over twice inside our five - once on a fumble and again at the end of the half on an interception. The boo birds were out as the teams headed to the locker room with the Gators up 20-0.

I said last week I thought the fans would have a little something for us this week with a rival coming to town, but they proved me wrong in booing the home team at the end of the first half and throughout the second half. I can understand their frustration, but just cannot fathom booing a bunch of 18- to 22-year-old kids playing for free and at home. Even back in the 8-5 days of the Zooker, I managed to never boo the home team. …
