A FIRM from the region has won a new prestigious award for improving the health of its staff.

Cramlington manufacturer Thermo Fisher Scientific, in Northumberland, has won The Better Health At Work Award, developed by NHS workplace health specialists in partnership with Public Health North East.

It has also been chosen to receive Northumberland Care Trust's Healthy People Healthy Business Award.

Thermo Fisher Scientific, which has approximately 80 staff, makes sterile plastic bags and sterile water for the healthcare, pharmaceutical and veterinary sectors.

Maureen Shepherd, workplace health specialist for Northumberland Care Trust, said: "This is a real achievement for a business.

"It exemplifies the growing commitment across the North East to embed healthy and safe working practices into all workplaces, thus reducing sickness absence, improving productivity and showing staff that they are valued and respected.

"In order to gain both awards, Thermo Fisher Scientific had to meet a broad range of criteria, including healthy and family-friendly policies, support for staff with caring and parenting responsibilities, robust safety procedures and skills development.

"The company also ran several health-related campaigns and events, including a no-smoking day, promoting staff fitness with blood pressure checks, advice on healthy lifestyles and a week-long series of events aimed at raising awareness of healthy diets."

Staff tried out exotic fruit, tasted low-fat recipes devised by a nutrition expert, took part in games and quizzes to raised awareness of fats and sugars in food and even ate healthy low-fat cakes provided by Ann Woollett, one of three health advocates.

Ann said: "We are so enthused by winning these awards and by the fantastic response of our co-workers and management that we will definitely be aiming to continue on to the silver level of the awards next year. …
