COMPLAINTS about noisy neighbours are soaring in Newcastle with late night parties and loud music the biggest problem.

The city council has a special team to deal with nighttime noise and the courts were urged today to hand out tough penalties to offenders.

In 2006-07 the city council received 5,222 complaints which last year rose to 7,402.

The figures were obtained by Coun Stephen Lambert, Labour spokesman on neighbourhood and community safety.

There was an increase in complaints in all but one of the city's 26 wards with Westgate, North Jesmond and South Heaton among the worst.

Fewest complaints were in Dene, Westerhope and Castle wards.

Coun Lambert said: "The problem ranges from loud music late at night, alarms going off and crashing and banging about. We need to get to grips with the problem." Coun Anita Lower, Liberal Democrat executive member for community safety and regulation, says they launched their Nightwatch noise service in May, 2005. …
