Freshmen Cope with First Tests; Some Cruise through with No Problem, While Others Struggle to Adapt

It's the time of the year when stress starts to hit college freshmen.

They aren't in high school anymore. Teachers and tests are tougher. Midterms are approaching, which means the first big tests in college. Some are finding tests to be easy while others are searching for the motivation to study.

Here's what our freshman bloggers on Jacksonville.com think about college thus far:

MARIA STONER

FLORIDA COMMUNITY COLLEGE AT JACKSONVILLE

Her first tests: "I took my first 'college test' in my algebra class. I studied quite a lot, mostly in the math lab. We got our results and I'm very pleased to say that I scored 100 percent on the test. Oh yeah!"

Different from high school: "Now, I couldn't tell you much about how college is different from high school because, as you may know, I earned my GED. But there are definitely advantages to being an older student. You're there because you want to be, you're not quite so distracted by members of the opposite sex and your days of pulling all-nighters and waking up with that killer hangover are now just fond memories."

Her first tests: "I haven't had any 'big tests,' but my first quiz in comparative politics earned me a perfect A."

Different from high school: "In high school we had tons of in-class assignments and activities, which was very annoying because it left little time for actual learning. Unlike knowing where I stand throughout the marking period, I probably won't have any idea until the last couple of weeks, because there are only a few grades factored into the final grade."

Her first tests: "I've never been one for studying, beyond skimming the book and looking at my notes, so I was kind of at a loss for what to do. I know that tests in college are supposed to be a really big deal, but honestly I have never taken any test seriously. …
