EMMA WATERHOUSE is the latest Chester-le-Street recruit to taste success after posting the fastest time in the Scottish Athletics East District Cross-Country Relay Championships in Prestonpans.

Competing for her Stirling-based club Central AC, Waterhouse ran the second of three stages and proceeded to knock out the quickest time of the day as Central stormed to an impressive victory.

"I knew I was in decent shape, but you never know in relays how you are going to run and, of course, how well the other athletes will perform," said the 25- year-old.

"In the end the main opposition came from members of Central, for not only was I the fastest, but the second and fourth fastest overall were all from our team.

"It was a great day for the club, and my mum and sister were in Central's B team which finished sixth, while my dad took over team manager's duties for the day. It was a family affair."

Due to work commitments, Waterhouse missed out on the recent North of England Four-Stage Road Relay Championships at Hartlepool, so while she posted the fastest time on her trip home last weekend, she has failed to break into the Chester-le-Street squad which will line up in this weekend's National Relays in Sutton Coldfield.

When I asked her if she was disappointed not to be included, she said it wasn't a problem as she didn't expect to get the nod, especially with the team winning the North of England Championship so easily.

"I'm not upset at all," confessed Waterhouse.

"I missed the Northerns as I was away working in Switzerland at the time and, while it would have been nice to run once again at Sutton Park, I don't feel let down at all by not being picked.

"We have strength in depth at Chester-le-Street and I hope the girls all run well on Saturday. …
