IT is fast approaching two years since the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC for short) took over the former Huntsman UK Petrochemicals operation based on Teesside.

The acquisition by SABIC of the UK Petrochemicals business in December 2006 was something of a historical milestone because it marked the first time a major Middle Eastern chemical company had put significant roots down on Teesside.

SABIC has grown very rapidly in recent years and is now the world's fifth largest petrochemicals company. The company is among the world's market leaders in the production of polyethylene, polypropylene and other advanced thermoplastics, glycols, methanol and fertilizers.

SABIC now operates in more than 40 countries across the world and has more than 31,000 employees worldwide.

In Saudi Arabia, birthplace of the company in 1976, SABIC has 20 world-scale complexes and 19 of them are located in the industrial cities of Al-Jubail and Yanbu. Some of these complexes are operated with multi-national joint venture partners such as ExxonMobil, Shell and Mitsubishi Chemicals. Elsewhere, SABIC manufactures on a global scale in more than 45 countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific. SABIC's overall production has increased from 27 million metric tons in 2001 to 55 million metric tons in 2007.

SABIC UK Petrochemicals has become an integral part of SABIC Europe, which is a subsidiary of the parent company SABIC.

SABIC Europe's headquarters are at Sittard in the south of The Netherlands and includes all of SABIC's Polyolefins activities in Europe, employing around 3,200 people.

SABIC has a European-wide network of sales offices and logistic hubs and operates on three petrochemical sites in Europe - at Geleen (The Netherlands), Gelsenkirchen (Germany) and the Teesside site in the UK.

In 2007, SABIC Europe produced 8.7 million metric tons of petrochemicals, mainly for the European market.

The SABIC UK Petrochemicals business has manufacturing assets at both the Wilton International and North Tees chemical complexes, directly employing more than 800 staff. …
