PD Cooper's reflection (Voice of the North, October 21) on the previous letter from the General Secretary of the Jesmond Residents' Association, Alan Grant (Voice of the North, October 18) expresses his "disappointment" at what he regards as "the abrogation by the universities of any responsibility for the wider problems caused by . . . students in communities". In defence of Newcastle University, at least, I must point out the work of a team of dedicated staff in this university, who work 'on call' on evenings and weekends to support the police in reining-in unruly students. Persistent offenders are expelled.

Furthermore, it is only fair to point out that our sustained efforts to expand halls of residence for our students have been hampered by decisions of the city council.

We were recently refused planning permission for an expansion of Castle Leazes Halls to provide a further 300 bedspaces, so we are now able to expand only by 98. …
