AN OUTDOOR classroom with musical toadstools - now how many other schools can say they have one of those?

Well St Gabriel's RC School in Ormesby can!

With money from the Diocese and funds raised within the school, the school's secret garden has been opened this year.

And the learning benches, sculptures, plants, water feature and magnetic games have all proved hugely popular with the youngsters at the school.

But the garden is just the latest of the developments at the school.

Over the last year, the school has begun a programme of refurbishment which has created a real buzz with pupils, staff, governors and the community as a whole.

When Gazette People went to visit, we were taken on a full tour of the school and were able to experience the warm family-feel that runs throughout the school.

Youngsters in the library were enjoying reading and researching in their colourful new library.

And others were getting to grips with the computers in the IT room.

We were also treated to a demonstration from the school's Science Club who showed off a rocket they had built and also and exploding volcano.

The school also run other lunchtime and after-school groups which include a variety of sporting clubs, for hockey, football, rugby and tennis.

And music is also popular at the school, following a series of workshops including a number of African Drumming sessions.

The pupils have also recently been doing their bit for the environment.

St Gabriel's has been awarded their Bronze Eco Award and are currently working towards their silver.

Students at the school have been learning to care for the local area and have also built bird boxes and hedgehog houses.

And plans have been made to create a set of allotments at the school, which pupils will be able to use to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

Academically the school are also going from strength to strength and last year achieved their best ever SAT results. …
