MRS Vera Wells (nee Ayres) loved to write poems on all sorts of subjects, especially about home town and its people. These two selections have been sent in by her daughter-in-law, Mrs C A Wells (nee Wooding), of Eston.

GRANGETOWN My old town was Grangetown The place where I was born Right near the steelworks By the name of Bolckow Vaughn A grand place was Grangetown Where men worked hard all day Plenty of work in those days But very little pay We were proud of our town Our steel went far and near To make the finest bridges That will stand for many a year Railway lines were made there And shells and bullets for war But it will never be the same place As it was before They have took the heart from Grangetown And closed down most of the works Knocked down most of the houses And even pulled down the church But most of the people of Grangetown No matter where they roam Will keep a part of it in their heart And always call it home GOOD HEALTH Don't smoke, or you'll get cancer, Don't drink, or you'll damage your liver, Don't have sex, in case you get Aids, Don't eat salt, it's bad for your blood, Don't eat fat, it's bad for your heart, Don't eat eggs, you could get salmonella, Don't eat beef, you'll get mad cow disease, Don't take sugar, it's bad for your teeth, Don't drink water, it isn't pure, Don't swim, the water's polluted, Don't laugh, you could crack your ribs, Don't breathe, it's bad for your lungs, Don't enjoy life, it gives you stress, But if you are still in the land of the living, If I were you I'd do all the things You are not supposed to do Before it's too late, And if you survive, be a devil And do it all over again. …
