How ironic for Les Miles - Mr. "Roll the Dice and Go for It on Fourth and Take a Shot at the End Zone with Fingers Crossed, and Lady Luck Smiling" - to witness his luck run out not on the last play of the game, but on the first play and by a guy named Gamble, Darryl Gamble, the Bulldawgs' second-string middle linebacker.

Just 20 seconds into the game, Gamble intercepted Louisiana State University quarterback Jarrett Lee's first pass from scrimmage and returned it 40 yards for the Dawgs' first score. This set the tone for the game and fired up the Dawgs. It also stunned and silenced the 92,000 LSU fans in Tiger Stadium. The Tigers fell behind and never caught up.

LSU tied the score at 7-7 on their next drive, but the Dawgs scored twice on consecutive possessions, going up 21-7. The Tigers pulled within four points early in the third quarter, but the Dawgs pulled away again with big plays from the big three playmakers, Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno and A.J. Green.

Stafford hit Green on a 49-yard touchdown pass, then, just a few ticks of the clock later, Moreno ripped a 58-yard run up the middle for another Dawg TD. LSU did try to answer, but trailed by 21 points three times in the second half, with the Dawgs protecting a comfortable lead. Adding to the first-play irony, late in the fourth quarter Gamble intercepted Lee a second time and cashed out with a 53-yard return for a TD as the Dawgs won big in the bayou.

This was the first time in 114 years that LSU has given up 50-plus points twice in one season. This loss also ended a streak of 30 wins in Tiger Stadium.

The Dawgs travel to Jacksonville today for the second in a brutal four SEC road-game schedule. The Dawgs will take on the Gators for the 87th time. The series record stands at 47-37-2, the Dawgs with a 10-game lead. This game is always circled on the calendar. …
