DURHAM University First XV's unbeaten start to the season ended with they lost 21-20 to Loughborough University.

Despite scoring first through Tom Close, Durham were unable to hold on to their advantage and conceded on the stroke of halftime with the opposition full-back crossing the line.

After the interval, with the score 7-7, the game was very even as neither side seemed to be able to pull away and establish a serious lead.

Loughborough executed a well-moved blind side attack to score, but were pegged back by Durham as Freddy Shepherd crossed for the home side following excellent work from Paul Loudon.

This score seemed to spur Durham into action, and they enjoyed their best spell of the game midway through the second half.

However, the Palatinates were unable to capitalise and, on the break away, Loughborough punished their profligacy with a seven- pointer.

A long-range penalty was added by James Crozier, but Durham were left a point short as the referee blew for full-time. …
