INJURY and suspension-riddled Berwick Rangers remain anchored near the foot of the Scottish Third Division after crashing to a third straight league defeat against Albion Rovers at Shielfield Park.

But the Borderers number two Martin Mooney was not prepared to use the fact that a total of six players were ruled out as an excuse.

"The fact remains we were beaten by the better side on the day," said Mooney. "They have some quality players and this showed us what we have to try and aspire to.

"At one stage it actually looked as though I might have to put my boots on and take a place on the subs' bench."

Rovers, who knocked Rangers out of the Scottish Cup at Shielfield only a fortnight earlier, took the lead after 18 minutes through Ross Harris.

But Berwick could count themselves desperately unlucky not to have equalised only two minutes later when Craig Anderson saw a bullet 25 yard strike whistle past Chris McCluskey only to rebound from the bar and after John Dillon had twice cleared off the Rangers line he was denied again by a great save by the keeper. …
