A PENSIONER left without heating for six weeks is looking forward to a warmer Christmas.

Second World War veteran Fred Milburn had to endure freezing conditions after his boiler broke down.

He was forced to walk to his son's house to take a bath, carry his washing to a friend's home and tuck up each night under an electric blanket.

Fed-up with waiting for his landlord to fix the problem which had left him without any heating or hot water, the 83-year-old made an impassioned plea for help through the Chronicle.

The landlord quickly fixed the gas fire and is arranging for the boiler to be mended after the Chronicle stepped in.

Now Fred is enjoying a much warmer ground floor flat, in Westminster Street, Bensham, Gateshead.

He said: "It's champion. The boiler has been condemned and the gas fire has been fixed.

"They put a notice on it saying it's dangerous. I'm just glad I can live here normally again, it's been terrible. …
