Forget the Past, It's a New Season for Seminoles; Western Carolina Is What FSU Needs to Get Season Started

I feel lucky because FSU has had two weeks to work on Western Carolina. Surely, there is plenty of stuff to report about this match up. I guess this was one last going-away present from Athletic Director Dave Hart.

I am not really sure why we took an opening-week bye, but I bet it was some of the same smart thinking that keeps scheduling us in Thursday night games. We have not had much luck with those games. If we can survive the Michigan curse, we should be alright.

Luckily, we are no where near a fifth-place ranking and the only thing WC has in common with Appalachian State is they are both from the Carolinas. Then it is on to Chattanooga, who has obviously made someone very mad. They should be pretty tenderized by No. 4 Oklahoma (their first week opponent) by the time they get to FSU.

Western Carolina in our opening week is not an embarrassment to me. I have thought for a long time that we should pad the first couple of games of the season, especially since we have been struggling. So it is kind of nice not to have a powerhouse for the opener. The only good I could ever find in playing a strong team for the opener was that it got an important game out of the way, and if you lost you could possibly recover from it.

As for WC, I am not really sure if I am a bad football fan because, outside of their mascot and school location, I really do not know anything about the team. The style of offense they run, and base defense is something that we will not see the rest of the year.

This used to happen to the University of Georgia and Georgia Southern, whose offense UGa would have to defend only once a year.

This is why little teams creep up and beat big teams. You are forced to sometimes look past them.

What's important to me is trying to see how the Seminoles look on game day. Are they playing for the team or for themselves? …
