It's time that the human services provided by nonprofits be considered a "must-have."

In too many minds, especially in government, human services are considered "nice to have."

That, despite the fact that Jacksonville is blessed with many well-managed nonprofit groups that can rank with any in the nation, said Sherry Magill, president of the Jessie Ball duPont Fund at a recent meeting of the JCCI Forward group.

The nonprofit sector in Jacksonville already is lean, she said. The financial situation is "grim," and we have our collective heads in the sand if we don't appreciate that.

Nonprofits will see a $25 million drop in funding from government in fiscal 2009, according to a report for the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. Another round of cuts threaten the services they provide.

And if government, especially state government, cuts more funding to nonprofits, there are not enough alternative sources of funds to make up the difference. Because nonprofits often serve the voiceless, they often don't have the same political power when funds are under pressure. …
