THE ASCENT OF MONEY 8pm, Channel 4 We are all well aware that something has gone horribly wrong in the world of finance but most of us don't know why. Professor Niall Ferguson, right, has been inspired to put the whole business in its historical context. He argues that money has always been at the heart of everything it bankrolled, just to take one example, the Renaissance.

The Incas had no concept of money, so the Spanish came and took all their precious metals. Watching this fascinating account of man's age-old devotion to filthy lucre, one begins to see a pattern emerging.

CLONE 8.30pm, BBC3 It is difficult to know where to start with a programme as daft as this. The basic premise is that a shorttempered scientist has spent 17 years and sacrificed three marriages to the creation of the perfect fighting clone. He works in a top-secret location for MI7. On the day of the clone's unveiling, lots of belligerent generals arrive to view the breakthrough, which topples over, wants to kiss everyone and insists on showing its bottom. …
