Jacksonville homicide detectives were at Waters Edge Apartments on the Northside on Friday after someone emptying a garbage can noticed a body in a trash bin.

A maintenance man told the Times-Union he saw the body in the Dumpster around 8:30 a.m.

Lt. Pat Ivey of the Sheriff's Office said the man's body was mostly covered in trash. Police haven't determined an approximate age or whether the man had any distinguishing marks. The investigation into how long he might have been there and the cause of death is ongoing.

A Jacksonville fire-rescue vehicle driven by a district chief crashed head-on Friday into a civilian vehicle.

John Bracey of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said the district chief was driving a department-issued sport utility vehicle - with lights and sirens on - to a structure fire in the 1900 block of Sixth Street around 10:45 a.m. The SUV collided with a pickup truck at 21st and Liberty streets, and the civilian driver was ejected.

The pickup driver was taken to Shands Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries. The district chief, who Bracey wouldn't name, wasn't injured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. It was unclear who was at fault and if either driver was wearing a seat belt.

Two people are dead and several were taken to the hospital after a two-vehicle wreck around midnight Thursday in Putnam County.

It happened on Florida 20 near Twin Lakes Road in Interlachen, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A car driven by Stacy A. Nelson, 43, of Hawthorne, was crossing Florida 20 at Twin Lakes when it collided with a pickup truck. The force of the impact ejected two of the three passengers from the rear seat of the car, the crash report said. …
