PLANS to build an ambitious pounds 45m retail and leisure park, creating 800 jobs at Bishop Auckland, have been given the go-ahead.

The 150,000 sq ft development by Terrace Hill, which has offices in Stockton, will regenerate land which has been derelict since the closure of Warner Electrics in 2003.

A hundred jobs are expected to be created during the development phase and a further 700 will follow once the scheme is fully operational, said Terrace Hill.

A cornerstone of the development is a 60,000 sq ft Sainsbury's food store, alongside a 58,000 sq ft leisure complex, comprising a six-screen, 1,000-seat multiplex cinema, bingo hall and ten-pin bowling alley.

Two restaurants, including a drive-through facility and a long-awaited Northern Premier League standard stadium for Bishop Auckland Football Club complete the scheme.

Although planning has been approved the scheme must now be referred to the Government office for the North-east before construction can commence. …
