Jackson Students Get Some Help in Preparing for SAT

Article excerpt

Twenty-five students from Andrew Jackson High School will probably breathe a little easier when they take the SAT this year, thanks to former Jacksonville Jaguars star Tony Boselli and his nonprofit foundation.

They recently received scholarships from The Boselli Foundation to take Kaplan's SAT Complete program, which helps with test preparation and offers score-raising strategies.

The recipients are: Yesheika Allen, Victoria Alston, Lyndsay Batten, Jasmine Bell, Sheri Collins, Schadre Dent, Kiersten Ford, Chris Franklin, Alexis Frazier, Dorian Guy, Tashima Hall, Sanbrielle Hornes, Lamesha Jackson, Ashlee Mcclenton, Jzaniece Merriman, Derek Owens, Richelle Roberson, Cherrice Robinson, John Shellman Jr., Loan Tran, Jasmine Vereen, Marquel Wade, Brittany Williams, Kiara Wooten and Phillisia Youmans.

Boselli visited the Northside school to talk with the students and present the scholarships.

A Scottish Music Celebration is at 5 p.m. downtown Sunday at St. John's Cathedral, 256 E. Church St., in commemoration of St. Andrew's Day. (He's the patron saint of Scotland.)

The Jacksonville Pipes and Drums, members of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and The Cathedral Choir will perform. A reception follows the concert.

It's free, and a nursery will be available. Call 356-5507.

Downtown Vision needs volunteers.

The Downtown Historic Church Tour is Saturday, Dec. 6, and about 80 people are needed to give directions, answer questions, assist with ticket sales and take photographs. The tour is from 1 to 5 p.m., but volunteers are needed in three-hour shifts from noon to 3 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Call Tasha Tucker at 634-0303, ext. 225.
