CC of Wrekenton and CS of North Shields are completely out of order in condemning AC of Sandyford's views about swearing on TV. There may be other more important things to worry about, but that doesn't mean we have to tolerate the F word or other profanities on our TV screens.

That word crops up in many films, but there is no need whatsoever for TV celebrities or presenters to use profanities - they are just showing just how extremely ignorant and offensive they are. I have heard people use the F word four or five times in a short sentence of about 10 or 12 words. Where's the sense in that? They are just plain stupid. If there are those who can't put a sentence together without using profanities, then they should keep their mouth shut.

Also I can't stand those people who tell others to get a life just because they don't agree with the other's views. JA, Gateshead.

IN 1998 Tony Blair set up an inquiry into the British Army, despite an earlier inquiry finding that no blame could be found. We now hear that the head of this inquiry has decided to add another year to this. The cost to now is more than pounds 180m. It has been called a lawyer's paradise, and I am sure that taxpayers would rather see their money spent more wisely. HJ, Windynook, Gateshead.

Before the council spends another penny on additional areas with 20mph speed limits, may I suggest they take a serious look at the areas already so designated.

I live in one of these areas and in my own and surrounding streets I have yet to see any vehicle other than driving school cars observing 20mph speed limits.

The majority of drivers seem to think that any speed goes. This is particularly evident on Fenham Hall Drive and Wingrove Road North, to mention only two streets.

Unless the council's latest idea is backed by the necessary safeguards they are throwing good money after bad. …
