DANCE Savion Glover: Bare Soundz Sadler's Wells

BLACK ties, and tiny tots, have dominated tap for so long that Savion Glover still seems like alien talent. The American tapper is scarecrow skinny, with an undisguised awkwardness that includes kipper wrists and gangling legs. Eschewing grooming, his tied-back dreadlocks dance like sea anemones, and he smiles like a rag-taggity kid on a surfer's beach.

Like its name Bare Soundz, Glover's show is pared back - plain set, casual costumes, and just three dancers (Glover plus Maurice Chestnut and Marshall Davis Jr) who together seem to tap out rhythmic mysteries.

There are no musicians, which gives an astringent, almost academic mood to proceedings, as there's no jazzy emollient to shimmer the set.

All we have are three excellent tappers, Glover easily the best but Chestnut and Davis are also extremely good. At one point, Chestnut moves in shimmies so small and fast that he looks like a pneumatic drill. …
