Speaker Faces Being Forced out after Raid

COMMONS Speaker Michael Martin may be pressed to take early retirement at the next election in the wake of the Damian Green affair, the Standard has learned.

Senior MPs say confidence in Mr Martin has been badly damaged by the ease with which police were allowed to search the Tory immigration spokesman's office and remove confidential files.

One said: "There has been talk before of the Speaker standing down at the next election and perhaps making a statement well in advance of that to make his intentions clear. I think that in the light of what happened last week, there will be more such talk.

"The Speaker is the ultimate guardian of the rights and privileges of Members of Parliament and on this occasion, there was clearly a major failing at some level in the system. It would be wrong to jump to conclusions but, ultimately, the buck stops with the Speaker." Mr Martin last night said he will make a statement to the Commons this week to explain what happened and what his own role was. …
