EXACTLY how hitman Allan Foster escaped the country after the murder of his former ally David "Noddy" Rice remains a riddle.

Only weeks before fleeing he was being handled as an informer by the Serious and Organised Crime Agency.

And today the Chronicle can reveal he had slipped in and out of the country several times before.

But a spokesman for SOCA said Foster ceased to be used as a Covert Human Intelligence Source, an informer, several weeks before the murder.

It is understood Foster was still carrying on his other criminal activity while being handled by SOCA.

Northumbria police were looking for him over the theft of an pounds 80,000 ring from a jewellers in the MetroCentre.

SOCA ditched Foster as a CHIS as a result around two weeks before Rice was lured to his death and gunned down on May 26, 2006.

A SOCA spokeswoman said: "As a result of Foster's ongoing criminal activity, even when on licence, SOCA took the decision to cancel his authority as a covert human intelligence source. …
